Some good things about soft drinks are that some athletes choose to drink soft drinks to help them boost their energy when performing. Soda can also help with stomach distress or burping to help with bloating after performing over a long period of time. However, soft drinks can also be very unhealthy. One 12oz. can of coke can carry â€Å"143 calories per serving† (â€Å"Sodas, Soft Drinks: Classic Coca-Cola†). Cola contains Phosphoric Acid, sugar, artificial coloring, artificial sweetener, and caffeine, these unhealthy ingredients can eat tooth enamel cause diabetes, cancer, and miscarriages.† Recent headlines have raised concerns that diet sodas boost stroke risk. Diet and regular sodas have both been linked to obesity, kidney damage, and certain cancers. Regular soft drinks have been linked to elevated blood pressure† (â€Å"Sodas and Your Health: Risks Debated†). Consumers may be surprised that there are no vitamins or minerals in a soft drink. They also might be surprised in the sugar content. â€Å"Too much refined sugar in the diet is linked to many adverse health conditions. The American Heart Association tells consumers to have no more than 6 teaspoons or 24 grams (women) or 9 teaspoons or 36 grams (men) of refined sugars each day† (â€Å"Sugar in Drinks†). One coke has more than enough grams of sugar to complete the body’s sugar needs for one whole day.
